Learn The Technical Basics of Painting Animal Fur

Make your animal and wildlife subjects look realistically life like!

If painting wildlife is a subject you’ve always wanted to master, then learning to paint convincing fur textures is the key to your success.

The secret is knowing what to look for and knowing how to describe the surface textures of the animals you see.

This class is designed to build your skills, painting techniques and the confidence to challenge any wildlife study in the future.

To get good results we must break it down into bite size pieces. As a student artist, I too struggled with painting realistic animal fur, that is, until I had a major breakthrough about the concepts of visual texture and how light and value played a major role.

Here are the learning outcomes for this wildlife art class:

  • Learn how to see and read fur textures and colors. As you paint the four animal studies; the rabbit, cougar, two zebras and a large male lion, each study will help you learn the different qualities and characteristics of each of their fur types.
  • Explore the type, length, texture, and color patterns for each animal.
  • Discover the uniqueness of each animal's fur properties. 'Seeing' will become easier and easier as the student paints through each of the four wildlife subjects.

Course Materials Are Broken Into Bite Size Pieces

  • The first videos focus on the anatomy of numerous types of animal fur. This is key information to build confidence as the student recognizes different characteristics of fur types.
  • Four painted studies are completed during the course. Starting with a small rabbit, students work on brush technique and basic stroke control. This helps to explain and teach the growth patterns and fur direction.
  • Prior to starting the first of three larger painted studies, students have a well-rounded view of the subjects we’re covering. As we move through the course videos and written lessons together, you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment with each new painting experience.
  • There are classroom forums where students may upload photographs of works in progress, and questions and answers are shared between students and the instructor. Feedback is important. This helps the student know they are on the right track. If there are any challenges, these Q & A’s forums help clarify anything that might not be completely clear to you.

Wildlife Study #3 - Out of the Shadows

One of the four animal studies is the large male lion. This subject is developed using an indirect painting method. It begins with an underpainting followed by the layering of fur details and transparent color glazes.

Student Testimonial - "I have learned so much from this class – more than I thought possible. Neadeen gives super instructions, both with her videos and step-by-step instructions. I learned so much about working with a limited palette and her tips on painting short fur were invaluable. Before taking this class I attempted painting animals but they always turned out looking flat and childlike. The great thing is I could paint on my schedule – some days only an hour or so. This, I found out, actually helped me see mistakes early on because it gave me a chance to look at my painting from a distance. In my hometown there aren’t many options for someone who wants to learn to improve their painting skills. Those that I’ve tried haven’t come close to what I have learned through Art Apprentice and their fantastic instructors. I can’t say enough good things about this course. If you want to learn to paint fur, you have to try this class."

Watch and learn from the best seat in the house

One of the greatest benefits to taking an online class like this, is having the ability to hit the rewind button. If you need to re-watch a particular painting technique more than once, you can do so with a click. This also gives you lots of time to practice and digest the information at your own pace. Watching the videos from the best seat in the house gives you an over the shoulder view of the whole painting process from start to finish. Below is a short video snippet of the final painting details from the male lion. You can see every stroke at very close range.

  • Students are provided with reference materials and line drawings, and shown how to create value maps for painting each of the animal studies. These are skills and practices that will serve you well as you paint other animals in the furture. Painting along with the videos and following the step by step written lessons makes the process a rich and enjoyable learning experience for you.

Step By Step Lessons - Make It Easy To Follow

  • The high video content and written lessons make this course excellent value, especially when you consider finishing four different subjects and paintings!  The wide array of new painting techniques and paint applications will arm you with the best 'know how' to challenge many other types of animal paintings on your own. These skills are invaluable and can be applied to all wildlife studies.
  • This course has been designed for all skill levels of painter. Naturally it is recommended that you have some prior painting experience. That said, you will meet many painters who are at various stages of their artistic journey.
