How to Paint a Tropical Jungle Toucan

By Neadeen Masters, CDA

Acrylic Online Painting Class -There are some birds that are so unique, they just beg us to paint them. This toucan bird is no exception, and was on my 'to do' list for many years. Tropical birds are usually brightly colored, their feather patterns unique and in this case, the toucan bird has a signature beak that can't be missed.

Learning how to paint a toucan bird is quite easy as his body colors are simple...but learning how to paint the dramatic beak is another story!

One of the things I had to learn about before painting the beak is the translucency of the colors that make this beak unique. I also had to gain a better understanding of the color patterns and how they differ from toucan to toucan.

Bonus Feature

When creating this composition, I thought it would also be very helpful for students to learn about painting a tropical setting as the backdrop for this beautiful creature. That way, as you paint other tropical birds, the background arrangement and textures can be adjusted to fit just about any tropical bird. In this class you are learning to paint the bird and learning how to create a usable background treatment for future use. It's like two classes in one!

This painting study is placed in the center of a jungle vignette. Complete with all the trappings of spagnum moss, vines, lichens and dead twigs... And of course, the best kind of lighting... back lighting.

Neadeen takes you along the creative journey

to compose this painting

As we begin this study, you will learn how to paint each of the elements of the background. In step by step demonstrations and painting videos, I will explain how I place the different branches and leaves, mosses and twigs. Building the composition from the background, students see how each layer is created.

I will also demonstrate how the complexity of the background is really up to you... if you wish to make your background simple or complex, it's your choice...

 Class Progression
  • The class begins with an overview of the painting and Neadeen explains how the painting will progress.
  • Next students watch as a 'mottled' background is created and Neadeen explains in detail how to use the brushes, what to look for and exactly what the goal of the painting exercise is all about.
  • After the background is completed the branches and mosses are started and Neadeen paints through explaining and showing step by step how this is done. You can stop the class videos at any time to re-watch the process and paint on your own painting. At any time you can upload a photograph of your painting and ask for the teacher's pointers and feedback.
  • Next comes the bird. You can work at your own pace, stop rewind, ask questions and move on at your own pace. The class atmosphere is very relaxed.

    great teaching tool

Posted by Unknown on 26th Jan 2015

I really love the instruction I've seen all the videos and read all of the other information in the course. And i liked that the video for enjoyment was there for us to look at like a little bonus although I could not open the second video receiving a message saying it was private. the only thing I was a little disappointed in was that the finished painting that was done through video was not the finished painting that was shown. I realize that it was a work in progress and I think the instructions that were provided were enough to carry it throughto the end if I wanted to do the painting that was actually shown as the course painting.

    Superior Class.

I am taking this class combined with the other tropical bird studies. This one is my favorite. The teacher shows how to create the tropical environment around the bird. I found this very helpful as I paint a lot of tropical birds and always want to know how to paint the rainforest jungle. This class is good. I also like the way the teacher shows the design process, making changes as the painting grows. I learned alot from watching her make the changes. The bird is also very beautiful. I like to paint the bright colors of the beak and painting the details made me pay attention to details on other birds I am presently painting.
