Learn correct surface preparation, artist's tools and materials. The goal in this online class is to teach the student how to prepare for painting on several traditional and standard surfaces.

  • Students learn how to prepare a canvas, tin, glass, wood, plastic, and even prefinished surfaces before acrylic painting.
It doesn't matter what surface you want to paint on, we can show you how to best prepare it for painting. The instructors are all seasoned artists who have painted on all kinds and types of surfaces. They will share tips and many techniques to make the process easy and quick.

Text Lesson - Canvas - Various types of canvas, primed and unprimed - various grades. weight (oz,) texture, weave, cotton and linen.

Text Lesson - Multimedia art board.

Text Lesson - Wood - Condition of surface, wood-grains, hard vs soft woods, sanding, texture mediums, wood fillers, prep wood to paint.



Text Lesson - Watercolor Papers - Types of paper (hot and cold press vs painting style), weights, textures, sizing, using a support. Soaking and taping paper to support.


Text Lesson - Tin - Preprimed surfaces, raw tin, galvanized and old tin. Safety precautions when heating and working with tin such as the use of heat guns and baking. Prepping steps for old tin such as rust removal, washing to remove residues, fixing dents, sand blasting.




Text Lesson - Masonite and other manufactured surfaces - Hardboard. Sealing. Composition,strength,advantages, disadvantages, gesso, tempered, smoothness.


Text Lesson - Pre-Finished Surfaces - Ceramic tiles, candles, glass, pottery, terra cotta pots.concrete such as patio stones, non absorbent surfaces, absorbent surfaces, etching prep. Drying surfaces, hazards of using heat gun and dryers on glass, cure time
