Lost and Found Edges Create Depth, Interest and Attention

One of the ways to create the illusion of three dimension is understanding the importance of lost and found edges.

Artist Neadeen Masters has created an in-depth class for the beginning and/or intermediate painter. Learn how to paint a variety of hard and soft edges to create additional interest in your paintings.

A painting using a Palm Frond will be completed as you learn which of the palm blades need a lost or found edge.

The simple subject for this painting exercise offers opportunity to apply both lost and found edges in context.

  • Step by step video demonstrations of the painting techniques and development of the composition.
  • Step by step written notes to follow along with the videos. (easy to download and print)
  • Step by step photographs to follow the progression of the painting project.
  • Video access 24/7

Upon completion of placing your order you will receive an automatically generated order confirmation by email that contains a link to the  printable materials included with this class.   The printable material contains the links and passcode for all the class video files.  Please open the attachment and save the file to your computer.  Once saved to your computer you can print the materials and access the videos whenever you are ready to paint!

Just like the magician, the artist has the ability to make the edge of an object fade away or jump out at us. By controlling this type of contrast we either make them similar (lost) or different (found) from each other. In this class, you will learn how to paint these edges.

***This class may be about lost and found edges, but when hung on the wall, the Palm Frond Design would be a lovely and relaxing Canvas painting for the home.

Lost - this means that we don't notice this area very much, we can still see it, but we do something to de-emphasize so it doesn't stand out from the area around it.

Found - this means that we can see this area more easily than one that is lost - so in order for it to be found, it must be different from the area next to it or around it (it's always relative to something else)

Edge - this is the outside profile that makes up the contour or shape of an object - on a leaf this would be the outer edge of the leaf.

With a greater understanding of artistic concepts comes our ability to create depth and the realistic dimension we strive to describe. There are many methods for achieving the illusion of depth within our paintings. One of the ‘tricks’ which helps us establish and reinforce depth and dimension - is the concept of 'lost and found’ edges.
