When one can draw from a vast range of fundamental painting techniques, it gives one confidence to experiment and paint and try anything. It's like learning how to cook several different ethnic dishes.

  • A broad range of painting skills helps the artist move forward and prevents one from falling into a rut. Painting the same thing over and over can dampen our creativity.
  • Learning new skills opens opportunities regarding subjects to paint. Bring a professional 'look' to your work and take away the frustrations that new painters often struggle with on a regular basis.
  • Knowledge in this area brings freedom and confidence. When we learn new skills we are more apt to experiment and try new things.
  • Prepare for creative exploration. These 13 painting techniques will also help the artist develop their own independent painting style.

To Make Learning Easy

Class Materials Are Broken Into Bite Size Pieces...

  • The class videos start out by explaining in detail each of the techniques. This is key information to build confidence as you learn how to recognize the different techniques used. You will also learn to see the variations between textures, colors and patterns on different subjects. 5 Paintings get you painting right away.
  • Five painted studies are completed during the course and each is taught by a different instructor.
  • Starting with the ancient 'petic loc' technique, artist Jan Ozolek shows her students how to work on brush technique and basic paint control to create this historical painting technique used by the ancient illuminators. This helps to explain about controlling paint flow, detail work and transparency of color.

  • Next ,students paint leaves and berries with artist Susan Abdella. This painting exercise helps the student learn to block in color, and refine detail liner work. Students will have a well-rounded view of the subjects we’re covering. As we move through the course videos and written lessons together, you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment with each new painting technique you learn.

  • The Pink Poppy painting created by artist Sharon Hamilton, helps the student learn how to create atmosphere with a 'mottling technique'. This is for creating the varigated colored background that helps the artist create harmony and color balance. Sharon shows how stippling techniques are used to create details and texture. A houding painting technique is also taught for creating depth and dimension.

  • Next the student learns many old master techniques from artist Linda Wise. Linda demonstrates 'scribbling', 'wipe-out' and 'sfumato', 'crosshatching' and 'color glazing' to build dimension and depth. These are very old classical painting techniques.

Watch a short video clip as teacher Linda Wise demonstrates on of the steps in her painting lesson.

  • In the final painting, (below) artist Gaby Hunter teaches techniques for creating depth and dimension and places the emphasis on dry-brushing. This helps the student understand how dry brushing can be used to change values for form as well as for creating surface texture.

Student Feedback

Communication: There are many classroom forums where you'll upload photographs  of your work, and questions and answers are shared between students and the individual instructors. Feedback is very important. This helps you know that you are on the right track. If there are any issues or challenges, these Q & A’s forums help clarify anything that might not be completely clear to you.

  • Registration is ongoing, students may register for this course at anytime.
  • Once you have purchased the Course, you will receive a confirmation email and an additional email with login in information so you can enter the classroom.
  • Taught using DecoArt Traditions Artists Acrylics - however any artist grade acrylic can be used.
  • Students have unlimited access to classroom materials...no time restrictions
  • Students work along at their own pace.

    Great beginner course

Posted by Unknown on 22nd Nov 2012

the course covers a lot of material which can be done at my own speed. It is a great that there are videos illustrating how to do the various techniques. There are text lessons but these are not as clear as the videos. I personally have issues with the video streaming but probably due to an old computer. In general love the course. A couple projects I won't do again but I did learn from them.
