The Gatherers In An Apple Orchard - Creating Depth & Dimension - By Neadeen Masters

This extensive and in-depth painting lesson in pattern form is a study for creating depth and dimension in a landscape painting. The emphasis is placed on controlling color intensity with grey toners. Artist Neadeen Masters includes step by step details in this 27 page lesson. Step photos also show how each stage of the painting is developed.

Objectives of the Lesson:

• Mix colors from a limited palette.

• Mix color value according to the value scale. This will reinforce your knowledge about 'seeing' values.

• Intensity – control the brightness or dullness of color – using toning grays.

• Value – Create contrast within the center of interest area; reduce contrast to create ‘flow’ throughout the painting – using toning grays.

• Dimensional Control - Create dimension or distance within a landscape.

• Establish a light source.

• Develop a ‘center of interest’ area by controlling intensity and value contrasts.

• Create harmony using pre-mixed Grey values and earth pigments of Raw Umber PBr7 and Raw Sienna PBr7 as toners.

• Glazing – Apply transparent color to adjust hue, value and intensity – help develop the center of interest.

• Use a ‘mop’ brush to soften brush strokes when necessary.

• ‘Wet in wet’ casual blending
