Folk Art - Chippendale Style

A Flair of Chippendale Flower Painting - This is an Acrylic Painting Pattern

This painting lesson is based on the Historical Chippendale style painting technique that is popular with Decorative artists around the world. In the grand old houses of Europe, formal Chinoiserie lacquer work, gilding, hand painting as well as faux finishes on walls and furniture was a common aspect of interior decorating. These trends greately influential famous designers such as Chippendale and Robert Adam. They soon began using a great deal of painted decoration in their own English interiors.

These styles of painting were adopted and adapted by many. Sometime around the 1600’s and early 1700’s when decorative painting could be enjoyed by the common folk, we see more of the painted motifs emerging. Chippendale Floral painting styles of today find their roots steeped in history.

This Lesson:

The lesson teaches the artist how to paint Chippendale flowers, birds, roses and leaves; and to work with its unique painting techniques of layering and working with transparent and opaque pigments.

The techniques begin with white underpaintings on dark backgrounds as shown in the graphics below. The artist learns to control color intensities and values in order to create dimension. This is done through the use of layering techniques such as glazing and veiling.

Learning outcomes:

  • The lesson teaches the student to appreciate the benefits of optical mixing through the use of transparent and opaque applications.
  • Learn how value is acheived with the thickness and thinness of the paint applications.

***This design is painted on a large Chippendale styled metal tray, however the design can easily be adapted for a beautiful tabletop, trunk or for any custom furniture.

The design can also be cropped to create smaller vignette, these can also be enlarged to fit large canvas surfaces to create stunning floral paintings used as wall art. The possibilities are endless with this beautiful floral design.
