6 Top Ways to Market Your Art Via the Computer or Social Media

by Neadeen Masters on July 28, 2011

Being an artist who wishes to sell their work or bring in some extra income for yourself requires that you have knowledge about the business.  You may provide the world with some wonderful pieces of your media; however, if you do not know how to market your work, or yourself in the right fashion, you may fluster as an artist.  To become a thriving artist, you have to know how to market yourself and your media.  In the art world, these things are not highly publicized.  The art world can be a secretive community where no set rules are followed. It’s up you to make the first move and get your marketing underway. So how and where do you begin?

  1. Online – The internet has changed the way the art world works, especially for the new kid on the block. No longer do you have to schlep your portfolio around, begging for someone to look at it. On the internet, information abounds and opportunity lies around every corner. If you take the time to do a little research, it’s all there for the asking. No doubt it’s hard work, takes time and dedication. Here are a few areas to look into and to get you started.
  2. Social media – Social Media is on the lips of nearly everyone involved in marketing. Facebook, twitter, and online art communities such as the Art Apprentice Online Art Community are some free forms of social media where you can get the word out about what you do. By joining these groups, you can meet other artists, share your work, network and ask lots of questions. You’ll soon know what you need to do in order to get what you want, which is exposure!
  3. Marketplace – Selling your art work directly to the consumer is another avenue to follow. Ebay and Etsy are two popular options. Set up your free account with either of these two entities and you can have your own cyber ‘store’. Through facebook and twitter you can direct folks to your own little world of art. Fine Art America is another way you can sell your work directly to the consumer. Fine Art America is the premier online marketplace for buying, selling, and creating fine art prints, greeting cards, and original works of art.   It’s also the easiest way to stay in touch with your local art scene! Create your account and sell your original art via these online resources.
  4. Be prepared – As an artist, you must also be prepared.  You never know when something great may happen.  What if you were contacted with a chance of a lifetime; however, the time frame specified does not leave you with enough time to get things together?  Being prepared at all times can help you whenever you are not prepared for it.  Having excellent pieces of your work available at all times is a necessity.
  5. Set your goals and priorities. Do not get left out in the dark because you have been slacking or have lost the motivation to create your art. So get busy, learning and painting! Take readily available online art classes to improve your painting and drawing skills, or learn another type of paint media like painting with acrylics, oils, or watercolor. The possibilities are endless and your future is bright!
  6. Submit an article to an online magazineThe Art Apprentice Online E- Magazine encourages artists to submit painting related articles for publication. Share your expertise on a painting subject, write a painting or drawing lesson and get paid to do so. The AAO e-Magazine has a very nice pay for publication program where you can earn money or free advertising in exchange for your submissions. What better way to get the word out about what you do? Spend a little time to write about what you do best…include tips, techniques, step photos and see where this will take you.  Get your name out there…contact our magazine editor – Sue Pruett – email to: suepruett@artapprenticeonline.com

The artists at the Art Apprentice Online Art School are always willing to share painting tips and techniques with other like minded folks!.
